Take care around frozen bodies of water this winter

Winter has arrived in Grande Prairie in full force, but not after a few freeze/thaw cycles this fall.

The Grande Prairie Fire Department says especially because of those fluctuating temperatures, residents need to be careful, particularly with their pets, when near frozen bodies of water.

Ice does not always freeze at the same rate, which can make for thin patches, especially in areas of moving water.

If you do find yourself out on thin ice, or worse, having fallen in, the fire department says you should try and head back in the direction you came from, staying low on the ice, and pulling yourself out on your stomach until you can safely crawl to firmer ground.
