Spring on hold as Grande Prairie in for yet another blast of snow

It’s almost the May long weekend, and you know what that means for Grande Prairie: Winter Part IV. Starting Friday and ending on Sunday, the area is expected to get more than a dusting of snow, with temperatures hovering in the single digits.

Dan Kulak with Environment Canada says while residents may have spring in their step, Mother Nature doesn’t always play along.

“We do have a little bit of spring weather; I do like to say that just to keep it optimistic. It’s not just winter hanging in there, but it is actually a sign of spring. We do tend to get a fair bit of snow at times when we are trying to warm up into summertime, as there is still cold air up to the north.”

Kulak says he doesn’t anticipate a lot of snow, likely with single digit centimetre build up. However, with drivers likely using the roads for camping and outdoor activities, it’s best to pack a bit of patience if the weather end ups impacting them.

Kulak adds part of the charm of the Peace country at this time of year is that it’s always surprising.

“Cooler than you’d expect right now with average highs of 15 degrees. You have to understand, if every year was normal we wouldn’t have to talk about averages, and every year is going to be something different.”

There is good news on the horizon, however. Temperatures for next week are forecasted to be in the mid-teens.
