South Peace Ball Association starting new slo-pitch league

Grande Prairie is getting a second slo-pitch league.

Secretary Jacenta Hawco says the South Peace Ball Association is sticking around in some sense, after it was relieved of its duties maintaining the South Bear Creek Park Diamonds by the City.

“We’re not going to dissolve, and we’re going to go in a new direction. We’re looking at starting the new league; we went and had a sit down with the City and came out feeling positive. We’re just looking to move forward and start some options with us and start fundraising.”

They’ll still use the diamonds in town, and have already booked their usual tournament dates for next year.

The league plans to help the city with bookings, and it may be interested in purchasing some of their equipment.

However, whether they’ll still be able to operate under their current non-profit is unclear at this point.

“As it stands, the South Peace Ball Association is a managing not-for-profit, so we’re not sure if we’ll be operating under the South Peace Ball Association name. We might have to start a new league up under a new name.”

They’re hoping to get a sponsorship, like the other league in town, the Grande Prairie Labatt Mixed Slo-Pitch League.

It’s been a decade or so since there’s been two in Grande Prairie.
