Islamic Association urging support for locals from Sri Lanka

Grande Prairie’s Muslim community is offering its condolences to the victims of the Easter weekend Sri Lanka terrorist attacks. The Islamic Association of Grande Prairie says it condemns the deadly bombings at multiple churches and hotels.

“The people who carried out the attack in Sri Lanka are criminals who deserve the severest punishment as the Holy Quran elaborates that they are murderers and terrorists.”

Muslims in Sri Lanka are being urged to pray at home out of fear of retaliation, and the U.S. embassy is also asking citizens to avoid places of worship in general because there could be more attacks targeting religious centres.

Here at home, the Islamic Association is urging the community to come together to support its own.

“We urge our members and every citizen of this great community to reach out to their neighbours who are of Sri Lankan origin during this period of grief.

ISIS has claimed responsibility for the bombings, and Sri Lanka’s president says police are still looking for 140 people believed to have links with the terrorist organization.
