Fire department issues warning after four fires caused by smoking materials

The Grande Prairie Fire Department is reminding residents to butt out after four structure fires were linked to smoking materials over the last two weeks.

“It is very disturbing that we are still seeing these type of fires regularly,” says Fire Marshal James Kostuk.

“These fires are 100% preventable. People who smoke need to make sure cigarettes and matches are completely extinguished.”

Smokers should not extinguish cigarettes into vegetation, potted plants or similar items which are easily combustible. Kostuk adds if ashtrays are not available, use a metal can or pail. Never empty smoking material directly into a trash can.

Fire officials say the origin for the majority of home smoking fires is on an exterior balcony or open porch.
