Cineplex applies for licence to sell alcohol

People in Grande Prairie may one day be able to have an alcoholic drink while they are out watching a movie. Cineplex Odeon Grande Prairie Cinemas has applied to Alberta Liquor, Gaming and Cannabis for a licence to sell alcohol at the theatre.

Provincial laws allow for alcohol to be sold in a movie theatre and consumed in the lobby and in theatres while the movie is playing. However, AGLC spokesperson Heather Holmen says there is no way to know if or when a licence could be granted.

“Unfortunately, there isn’t a timeline, as there are a number of variables that may influence timelines including the theatre’s ability to meet all application and service requirements.”

Exact details on times and places alcohol could be served in the theatre are not yet known and could be up to the theatre’s discretion. Cineplex Grande Prarie, as well as the theatre’s head office, has declined to comment on any future plans to serve booze.
