The Gay and Lesbian Association of the Peace has put out a plea for volunteers and board members. Director Chancie Cook says if they don’t find more people to join, the group may not be able to continue.
“The standing board right now is committed to continue with the organization as best we can, we just won’t be as effective as we could be without those volunteers. Whether that means we fold as an organization or that we kind of just keep it afloat until we get those volunteers.”
GALAP has run in Grande Prairie for over ten years. It aims to increase the quality of life for everyone through a better understanding of sexual diversity. It is a 100% volunteer-based non-profit group.
Cook says they are looking for 3 to 5 members, regardless of gender, race or sexual orientation who can commit to attending a once a month meeting.
“We are 100 per cent an inclusive organization. You do not need to be LGBTQ+ identified to serve on the board. We accept everyone from every background, every race [and] religion. We just want everyone to be involved.”
GALAP takes part in three major events during the year including the pride flag raising at City Hall, the Pride Pancake Breakfast and the Canada Day Parade. Cook says it’s important to find more volunteers so that they can continue to be a part of the community.
“Grande Prairie needs a constant representation in the community for LGBTQ+ people so that we’re not just kind of gathering and being present once a year. We’re constantly in the community being visible [and] having that support for people because people need support all the time.”
