Councillor Tarant hoping city will consider adopting liquefied natural gas

With the opening of Canada’s first liquefied natural gas plant near Grande Prairie earlier this year, Councillor Rory Tarant is encouraging the city to be an early adopter of the alternative fuel.

Tarant says because LNG is a new industry, it’s a bit of a ‘chicken and egg’ situation.

“You need to have demand, and to have people using it for it to take off. So we can help by being early adopters of the technology, it would help encourage others to use it. We can, I think, show that there are cost savings available and also show that we’re supporting a local business.”

Tarant says there are opportunities for the city to convert vehicles and heating systems to run on liquefied natural gas, and would like to see the possibility explored.
