City offering up dust suppression services

The City of Grande Prairie will once again be offering a solution to those on gravel roads where dust after the spring melt is becoming a big issue.

The Calcium Chloride mixture will be dumped on roads if you choose to apply for the program. Transportation Manager Robert Carroll says many residents have in the past done the job themselves, but he knows with how quickly the dust can become a nuisance, and city staff will happily help.

“The residents may want some calcium in front of their houses to keep the dust down so doesn’t get into their yards. We will go out and do it for them.”

Carroll says this was a service initially offered by the County of Grande Prairie, and the city has kept it going since annexing the land where it most applies a few years ago.

He says the solution isn’t an invasive one and should do the trick after one application.

“Once the water from the product evaporates it leaves behind the chemical product and that’s what will form as a barrier on top of the road to keep the dust down.”

The application fee is $440 for residents and $660 for commercial, per 100 meters of gravel road.
