Wildlife safety training mandatory for Suncor employees after fatal bear attack

After one of its employees was killed by a black bear at an oilsands plant north of Fort McMurray earlier this year, Suncor Energy is making wildlife safety training mandatory.

In May, 36 year old Lorna Weafer was attacked when she came out of a washroom and her co-workers weren’t able to scare the bear away.

Suncor says safety training has always been available for employees, but Weafer’s death made the importance of getting it just that much more poignant.

Starting in April next year, all employees and contractors working in or visiting the Wood Buffalo region will be subject to varying levels of training.
