Grande Prairie RCMP kept busy with weekend calls for service

It’s a busy time to be a police officer in and around the city of Grande Prairie.

RCMP Corporal Roy Kennedy says the local detachment handled more than 250 calls for service over this past weekend, which is more than the detachments in Sherwood Park and Airdrie combined.

“It’s not meant to minimize or take anything away from those communities, it just goes to show how busy we are in comparison to other communities of similar sizes in Alberta.”

Kennedy says it could be argued that Grande Prairie’s younger demographic plays a role in those higher numbers.

“But there are so many young people that are here making a living and starting a family that are engaged in these activities, so it’s not fair to point a finger at the younger demographic, but that could be an influencing factor.”

12 assaults, 27 traffic collisions, and 14 impaired drivers were among the 257 calls RCMP responded to over the weekend.
