Grande Prairie skier wins silver at nationals

A Grande Prairie Skier has returned to the city with some new hardware. Makena Pruden recently won a silver medal in the 7.5-kilometre skate race at the National Cross Country Ski Championships in Gatineau, Quebec.

This was her first time at nationals and she says all she wanted to do was win at least one medal.

“I’m very pleased. It was my goal for the season to medal at nationals so to be able to complete my goals makes me really happy cause all my training paid off.”

Over the last year, the grade 10 student has spent 650 hours training at the Wapiti Nordic Ski Club. At the championships, she also placed 7th, 5th and 4th in her other races. Makena says she comes from a family of skiers and loves to compete.

“My parents skied and so they put me in skiing and I really enjoyed it so I just kept with it. When I was eight I decided I wanted to go competitive with it so I just started racing and I love it so much.”

Makena says she plans to take a month off before getting back to training and attending \camps this summer. The first one is in May in Vernon, British Columbia.
