Crews working to fix flooding in County

For people experiencing localized flooding in the County of Grande Prairie, help is on the way. County Public Works Director Dale Van Volkingburgh says crews have recently been out to places like Clairmont clearing blocked culverts.

“Yesterday they were steamed out once we received notice of it. For the most part, it’s drained off. It’s still draining but the major part of the ponding is drained away.”

Van Volkingburgh says workers have been out for about a week actively trying to clear areas in order to reduce water buildup that’s taken place because of the warmer weather. It can take up to 24-hours for pooled water to drain after crews finish working in an area. He adds that spring runoff conditions are not at the level that they were last year.

“I don’t think we’re going to see the type of spring runoff that we’ve seen in the past due to the amount of snow that we’ve had. I believe the snow that we did get was cold so it didn’t have a lot of moisture in it. I think we’re gonna see not as much water runoff but all it takes is a culvert to freeze and you end up with some damages.”

Privately-owned roads and developments are private property and maintenance is the landowner’s responsibility. However, people are encouraged to call public works if they see things like washed out or frozen culverts or flooding over roads that cause hazards for drivers. The public works 24-hour Emergency number is 780-532-7393.
