Speed skating championships a first for Grande Prairie

For the first time ever, Grande Prairie will play host to the Canada West Short Track Championships March 23 & 24th. The best short track speed skaters aged 11-16 from Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, Yukon and Northwest Territories will take their places at the starting line at the Coke Centre.

Meet Coordinator Jodi Winnicky says the event is free of charge, and that’s in large part to the helping hands they’ve received from a number of volunteers and supporters.

“We are a very small club and we could not do it without the support of many businesses and the city. We just want to give them a shout out as well.”

The Peace Wapiti Speed Skating Club, who is hosting the event, will be represented by three skaters and one coach.
