Wayne Drysdale happy to watch 2019 election from sidelines

After 11 years as the Member of the Legislative Assembly for Grande Prairie – Wapiti, Wayne Drysdale has found himself heading back to Grande Prairie without a return trip to Edmonton. Tuesday morning’s election call cancelled the spring sitting of the legislature.

Now a former MLA, Drysdale admits he will have to get back into the swing of introducing himself without the three letters following his name.

“I gotta get used to saying that,” Drysdale chuckles. “It just automatically flows, ‘Wayne Drysdale, MLA,’ but I guess I’m not anymore, so I’ve got to get used to that.”

Drysdale knew this day was coming for nearly a year, after announcing his intention not to seek re-election for the seat representing Grande Prairie – Wapiti in the upcoming vote. He tells MyGrandePrairieNow.com that, with how the campaigns look to be shaping up, he’s happy to be on the sidelines watching with everyone else in the province.

“I think all elections are ugly, but this one could be uglier than most, unfortunately. I hope it doesn’t, but I’m thinking it probably might be.”

Whoever wins, Drysdale says, will have to keep in mind what he believes is the most important thing voters in the Peace Country want from their elected officials: getting people back to work.

“It’s been said a thousand times; I don’t think it’s a surprise. It’s all the economy and jobs and getting our province our back to work. I think it affects different families in different ways; you can’t have the social side without the economy paying the bills”

While Drysdale has retired, it is only from the public sector, as he has accepted a position as Senior Vice President with Nauticol Energy in Grande Prairie.
