Tips for storm drain clearing

As the spring melt slowly continues in Grande Prairie, city staff are hoping people can lend a hand, or at least keep an eye on possible backups in storm drains.

“Especially in the city. If you know where your drain is and it looks like it’s covered over with some ice, you can just take a shovel or an ice scraper and chip the ice off the top of it,” says Transportation Manager Robert Carroll

Carroll says that while 99 times out of 100, no property damage of any kind will come from storm drains overflowing, it’s always better to be safe than sorry.

He adds the type of melt currently taking place could make the transition from winter to spring very smooth.

“Depending on the weather, it’s probably going to be happening into April until the threat of spring runoff has subsided”

Carroll says if you do have blockage or snow piling up on the storm drain that you can’t handle on your own, give a call to the operations centre and a crew will come to take care of it.
