County of Grande Prairie residents near Saskatoon Mountain may soon be able to breathe a little easier.
A new permanent air quality monitoring unit could soon be installed near the area after several proposals for new oil and gas infrastructure were submitted for approval.
All this after a petition which gathered 108 local signatures was accepted by County of Grande Prairie councillors on Monday. The County will now send a letter of support to the Peace Airshed Zone Association urging the installation of a new temporary or permanent unit.
Chief Administrative Officer Bill Rogan believes it’ll likely be a temporary solution to start.
“We can go out with one of these roving stations we leave it there for a period of time get that baseline air monitoring. At the end of the day, if it’s significant development and another station is required, they would look at doing that as well.”
If it becomes a permanent fixture, it will be the fifth in the region, including two within the City of Grande Prairie.
