Local judo athletes bring home six medals from international competition

A group of local Judo athletes have returned from competition with six medals. The Hoku Sei Kan Judo Club which runs facilities in both Grande Prairie and Wembley recently sent 10 students to the International Judo competition in Edmonton.

Nikita Tysruk took home a bronze in the under 14 male 60-kilogram category and Anthony Maclean took home a silver in the senior men’s 90-kilogram category.

On the female side in U16 competition, Mackenzie Querin won bronze in the 48-kilogram category, Sydney Kinderwater took home a silver in the 58-kilogram category and Mattea Sietz won a silver medal in the 70-kilogram group. In the under 18 category, Michelle Grisales brought home a gold medal in the 57-kilogram group.

A number of the younger Under 10 and 12 athletes also competed and received participation medals. They included Jackson Maclean and Jessica Grisales for the under 10 and Dominic McCarthy and Jhonathan Grisales for the under 12.

Each year the international tournament attracts around 800 other athletes from all over the world including Canada, the United States, Europe and Japan.
