Two Canada Winter Games medals coming to Grande Prairie area

Two Canada Winter Games medals are on their way home to the Grande Prairie area. At this year’s games in Red Deer, 16-year-old Michelle Grisales won bronze in the 52 kilogram division of the women’s individual judo event and Brooklyn Tews of Beaverlodge took gold in women’s hockey.

Those two medals were part of Team Alberta’s 100 medal haul. Altogether, the team took home a record 36 gold, finishing third behind Quebec and Ontario. They also won the Centennial Cup for greatest improvement, and the Jack Pelech Award for good sportsmanship, fair play, cooperation and competitive performance.

Grande Prairie snowboarder Kayla Milne was also at the games. She came 14th in both the parallel giant slalom and snowboardcross. She was joined by Trainer Dave Campbell, who was part of the bronze medal winning men’s hockey team, apprentice figure skating coach Anne-Marie Behnke of Peace River and mission staff member David Hurta.

The Canada Games is the nation’s largest multi-sport and culture event for amateur athletes. It is held every two years, alternating between winter and summer events. Grande Prairie previously hosted the games in 1995.
