UPDATE: Rycroft water system shut down

UPDATE #2: The Central Peace Regional Emergency Management Agency says the water main could not be isolated and the village was forced to shut down the water distribution system.

“Repairs are being arranged and we hope to have all services restored as soon as possible. Since we were unable to maintain positive pressure on the system, additional sampling and testing will be conducted in order to verify that water is safe to drink.”

Residents should not drink tap water until further notice. Drink bottled water only.

UPDATE: Peace Wapiti Public School Division says classes at Rycroft School have been cancelled for the day Thursday due to the water main break. Buses will run for high school students in the area who attend Spirit River Regional Academy.

A water main break has caused a shortage of water in the Village of Rycroft. An Alberta Emergency Alert was issued just before 11 p.m. Wednesday, with the Central Peace Regional Emergency Management Agency warning that potable water supplies are low.

People in the area of the Municipal District of Spirit River are asked to limit their water use to emergencies and essential use. The alert will stay in effect until the break is fixed and supply levels go back to normal.
