A local athlete has earned a medal at the Canada Winter Games. Michelle Grisales took bronze in the 52 kilogram division of the women’s individual judo event Tuesday.
The 16-year-old trains with Hoku Sei Kan Judo Club in Grande Prairie under her coach and father Carlos Grisales. She is coming off of a successful 2018, where she placed first at the Canadian National Championships, Ontario Open, and Edmonton International Championships.
Also part of a medal win for Team Alberta is Grande Prairie’s Dave Campbell. He was in Red Deer as the trainer for the men’s hockey team, which won bronze in a 12-0 game against Team Saskatchewan last Friday night.
Grande Prairie snowboarder Kayla Milne earned 14th place finishes in both the parallel giant slalom and snowboardcross. Brooklyn Tews of Beaverlodge is still in competition, prepping for the women’s hockey quarterfinal versus Manitoba Thursday.
Apprentice figure skating coach Anne-Marie Behnke of Peace River and mission staff member David Hurta round out the Peace Country contingent at the games, which run until March 3rd.
