Cougar, cubs spotted on Wapiti Nordic ski trails

Skiiers are being encouraged not to use the Wapiti Nordic ski trails alone. The Ski Club says a cougar and two cubs were spotted around the five kilometre turn off of the forest trails around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday night.

“It is not known if they were passing through or if they have a den in the area. Fish & Wildlife [officers] have been notified.”

On top of skiing in pairs, users should also make noise to avoid coming across wildlife by surprise. Children and pets should be kept close by.

Alberta Environment and Parks notes that cougars are less likely to approach groups of people. Bear spray and air horns are recommended.
