Storm forward nominated for AJHL award

For the first time in his playing career, Grande Prairie Storm forward Connor Blake is up for an award. Blake has been nominated for the Don McNabb Memorial Trophy given to the most dedicated player in the Alberta Junior Hockey League. Blake says it’s an honour to be nominated.

“I’m really appreciative that I’ve been recognized throughout the league for this award. I haven’t won anything yet so I’m just kind of taking it one step at a time… It’s just a nice acknowledgement to have.”

Blake was born in Calgary and started playing hockey at the age of six. He started his AJHL playing career with the Calgary Canucks in 2016 before being traded midseason to the Storm. Since then, he has continued to play for the Storm and was named team captain for the 2018/2019 season. Blake was nominated by his coach and says this shows that all the work he’s done hasn’t gone to waste.

“I think it’s really special because like I’ve said I’ve put a lot of work in and to have it recognized it means a lot to me. Hopefully, at the end of the day, I do win it but if not just to be nominated is special.”

Blake is up against Alex Young of the Canmore Eagles, Kyle Gordon from the Okotoks Oilers and Taner Miller of the Fort McMurray Oil Barons. The winner will be announced during the final week of the regular season in March.
