Fire sparks in Scenic Ridge garage

The contents of a residential garage have been destroyed by fire. The Grande Prairie Fire Department was called to a home in Scenic Ridge a little after 8 a.m. Thursday after someone noticed flames coming out of a garage in the alley.

They notified the people home at the time and called 9-1-1. By the time firefighters arrived, Platoon Chief Tony Lutzmann says the detached garage was fully engulfed in smoke and fire.

“We quickly knocked down the fire. There was a vehicle in the garage, but there was nobody in the garage at the time of the fire and it is currently under investigation.”

No injuries were reported. However, Lutzmann says the fire department had issues with people driving over fire hoses at the scene.

“They can be damaged quite easily, and even more so in this very cold weather. We’d like to remind the public that it’s unacceptable to drive over fire hoses.”

Lutzmann adds that many people think it’s alright to drive over the hoses if there isn’t water running through them, but notes they can still be damaged. That’s especially the case if a coupling is run over.
