Smoke from science experiment sets off alarm at Peace Wapiti Academy

Peace Wapiti Academy was briefly evacuated this morning after a science experiment set off a smoke detector.

The Grande Prairie Fire Department responded around 9:30 a.m., and Captain Ward Redwood says it’s likely the door to the classroom was left open.

The smoke from the experiment that would normally have gone up into the vents spread into the hallways, triggering the alarm.

Firefighters monitored the air quality in the room and the students were let back into the school after only about 10 minutes.
