People in Grande Prairie are being reminded to just drive when they are behind the wheel. During the month of February, Enforcement Services will be focusing on stopping distracted driving. According to Alberta Transportation, distracted driving contributes to 20-30 per cent of all crashes. It also says distracted drivers are three times more likely to be involved in a crash.
While driving, it is illegal to use a hand-held phone, text or email, enter information into a GPS, read, write or do things like shave or put on makeup. The Traffic Safety Act says it is also illegal to have a pet in the front seat if it interferes with the ability to drive. Pets should be secured when riding in a car.
The penalty for distracted driving in Alberta is $287.00 and three demerit points. A driver can be charged even if their driving performance doesn’t seem to be affected.
