County to award more than $2.53 million in community grants

The County of Grande Prairie plans to help more than 80 community groups this year. $2,533,228 in grant funding will be given to sport, recreation, facilities and cultural organizations in 2019. Reeve Leanne Beaupre says it’s important to help out groups that do so much for their communities.

“The County is pleased to recognize the valuable work that these organizations contribute and is appreciative of their efforts to provide services and opportunities that enhance the quality of life, sense of safety and pride in our communities.”

Around $1,466,955 will go to Community Assistance Grants, $710,774 to major community projects and $375,499 will be given out in Capital Assistance Grants. A list of the recipients are listed below:

Major Capital Community Grant ($50,000+):
$333,333 over six years (2018-2023) to the La Glace Regional Recreation Centre which since 2014, will bring the County’s total contributions to $3 million
$133,500 to the Nitehawk Adventure Park for equipment replacement
$75,000 to the Bezanson Booster Club to install a new school playground
$68,941 to the South Peace Centennial Museum for construction of a new shop
$50,000 to the Royal Canadian Legion #54 for modernization of the Grande Prairie Legion building
$50,000 to the Sexsmith & District Museum Society for repainting of the Sexsmith Grain Elevator

Capital Assistance Grant ($5,000-$50,000):
$50,000 to the Whispering Ridge Participarent for the expansion of outdoor play structures
$50,000 to the Valhalla Recreation Centre for facility upgrades
$41,900 to the Demmitt Cultural Society for construction of a new playground
$30,000 to the Bezanson Agricultural Society for the purchase of facility equipment at the Knelsen Centre
$22,016 to the Hythe Athletic Association-Arena for infrastructure upgrades/repairs to the existing building
$22,000 to the Saskatoon Lake Agricultural Society for a kitchen renovation to the Saskatoon Lake Hall
$20,000 to the Regional EMS Foundation for a Non-Ambulance Transfer Van Capital Project
$20,000 to the Wembley Agricultural Society for plumbing projects at the Wembley Arena
$20,000 to the Community Village Society of the Peace Country for renovations to create a new classroom
$17,500 to the Albright Community Hall Association for site preparation to construct a new community hall
$16,583 to the Spring Creek Cemetery for the replacement of the 1915 log church
$15,000 to Camp Tamarack for a replacement roof on the woodshed and disposition application for lease expansion
$15,000 to the Nitehawk Alpine Ski Team for modular building expansion
$12,500 to Evergreen Park for the purchase of a starting gate
$12,000 to the Robert W. Zahara Public School for construction and installation of a new “Loose Parts” Play Structure
$6,000 to the Beaverlodge Boys & Girls Camp Society for the purchase and installation of new dining room flooring at the Beaverlodge Boys & Girls Camp
$5,000 to the Beaverlodge Seniors Association for LED lighting conversion

$200,000 to STARS per year for operational funding over four years (2019-2022)
$75,000 to the Art Gallery of Grande Prairie per year for operational funding over four years (2019-2022)
$64,700 to the South Peace Regional Archives for operations
$56,000 to the Grande Prairie Sports Council for operational funding
$50,000 to the Nitehawk Year-Round Adventure Park per year for energy costs for five years (2015-2019)
$37,398 per year to the Grande Prairie Museum for operational funding
$25,000 to the Bear Creek Folk Festival for operational funding
$22,500 to Grande Prairie Technical Search and Rescue – per year for operational funding (2017-2019)
$20,000 to the Community Foundation of Northwestern Alberta for Vital Signs Report project funding
$14,240 to Kleskun Hills Museum Society for operational funding
$10,000 to the Grade Three Reading University for operational funding

$5,000 to County Seasonal Neighbourhood Ice Surface grants (five grants at $1,000 each)
$4,000 to the Grande Prairie Live Theatre for operational support of the Reel Shorts Film Festival
$3,300 to the Peace Draft Horse Club for operational support of the Northern Spirit Light Show
$2,500 to the Big Hearts for Big Kids Charity Fundraiser in support of Grande Prairie Youth Emergency Shelter Society
$2,500 to the City of Grande Prairie Pursuit of Excellence Program for three years (2016-2019) for a total contribution of $10,000
$1,700 to the Grande Prairie Petroleum Association STARS Hangar Dance
$1,250 to the Grande Prairie Regional College College Classic Golf Tournament
$1,200 to the Grande Prairie Regional EMS Foundation Family Golf Classic for Life
$1,000 to Hospital Foundations $500 each for Beaverlodge and Hythe
$600 to Dry Grad Committees $200 each for Beaverlodge Regional High School, Sexsmith Secondary High School, and Peace Wapiti Academy
