Freeze up in Peace River is taking a little longer this year. The Town says the recent warm weather has “considerably” slowed the ice front, and it was 10 kilometres upstream Sunday afternoon.
“It is likely that there will be an ice consolidation over the next 24 hours which we will be monitoring. If that happens river water will rise somewhat.”
It’s reported B.C. Hydro has been on site monitoring over the weekend. It will be increasing the flow coming out of the W.A.C. Bennett Dam in Hudson’s Hope, B.C. during the next cold snap to try to control what level the ice freezes at. Typically, it takes less than two days for any changes to affect the Peace River area.
The freeze up at the Town of Peace River normally happens in mid-January. Break up is typically around Easter.
