Aquatera Skating Oval expected to open Saturday

Sharpen those skates. After some less than cooperative weather in Grande Prairie, the Aquatera Community Skating Oval is almost ready to open. Oval Coordinator Bryce MacLennan says that if everything goes well, skates could hit the ice by Saturday.

“We’re looking pretty good. The ice is in fairly decent condition. It’s a little rough in places but we’re hoping to have it open to the public for Saturday because it’s in good enough condition that for public skating you can go out and skate around.”

The 400-metre outdoor skating rink is located on the lot west of the Eastlink Centre. MacLennan says they usually aim to open between Christmas and new years. In the past it has opened as early as boxing day and as late as middle of January. He says weather and the holidays lead to this year’s delay.

“The weather will be uncooperative, it’ll either be too warm or under a foot of snow. Then of course just with the holidays, Christmas and new years, we’ve been struggling with people being away on holidays. Now that we’re getting back into the swing of things, people are back at work and we’re going to be able to have it flooded and cleared on a more regular basis.”

When the oval does open, MacLennan says it should be open for public skating all day, every day. People can check the rink’s Facebook page for updates and ice conditions.
