The New Year has brought big news for a pair of hockey players with local ties.
Grande Prairie Storm rookie Alex Nordstrom has agreed to eventually play in his home state of Michigan. The forward from Hancock, MI has committed to attend Michigan Tech in Houghton.
The Storm team already has two alumni of the Michigan Tech Huskies program in Dennis Rix and Mark Malekoff. Nordstrom says he’s excited his career is bringing him home.
“I grew up watching the Michigan Tech Huskies since I was five, and it’s a dream come true. I’m looking forward to joining them in the future and I’d like to thank all my friends, family, and coaches for the support.”
18-year-old Nordstrom has 23 points in 25 games with the Storm so far this season.
Meanwhile, Grande Prairie’s Reece Harsch has been moved within the Western Hockey League. The 19-year-old defenceman has been traded from the Seattle Thunderbirds to the Saskatoon Blades.
Harsch has 10 points in 28 games this season, including two power-play markers. Blades General Manager Colin Priestner says the club has had its eye on him for a while.
“He plays a hard game, has 25 games of playoff experience, and knows what it takes to win a championship in this league. We feel Reece makes us a better team today and his leadership and experience will help our younger players continue to develop.”
Harsch was originally selected by the Thunderbirds 170th overall in the 2014 WHL Bantam Draft. He was part of the league championship-winning team in 2017.
