Municipalities working together was focus of 2018: County Reeve

2018 was all about the County working together with its neighbours. Reeve Leanne Beaupre sees the government updating the Municipal Governments Act making municipal collaboration mandatory a high point of 2018.

“That’s been one of the biggest events that’s happened this year for a lot of municipalities is looking at, from both sides of the lens, how each other operates, how we serve the ratepayers that we’re elected to serve and really what we do for each other and what we can continue to do whether it’s find more efficiencies or something else we can work collaboratively on.”

The act sets the rules for how local governments function and provide services. The updated version encourages municipalities to speak with their neighbours and makes it mandatory when it comes to infrastructure planning and growth.

Beaupre says collaboration has always been something the county has done and will continue to do.

“We’ve always done that with all of our neighbours urban and rural. It may not be something that’s in a nice big package tied with a bow but it’s an informal handshake, it’s a reach out or a call to a neighbour when you need something and they’re there and we do the same.”

This part of the new act came into effect on April 1st, 2018.
