City commits $250K to Tour of Alberta's Grande Prairie stop

The city is sticking to it’s commitment to support the Tour of Alberta’s planned stop in Grande Prairie next year.

The pro-cycling tour announced earlier this year that it would be holding it’s prologue in the Swan City, followed by the first leg of the race through the county.

Councillor Kevin O’Toole says he believes their $250,000 investment is worthwhile, based on the tourism and dollars that will be driven to the city next September.

“There’s going to be probably $24M spent in that 3 or 4 days her. There will be over a thousand people coming here, just on the organization end of things. That’s not including anybody that just wants to watch the race. So if you’re from out of town, you’re probably going to do some shopping, you’re probably going to go and have something to eat, and then you’re going to fuel up your tank and head home.”

O’Toole says Tour organizers will be in Grande Prairie in mid-November to start plotting out a route for next Septembers race.
