Local business wins Signmaker of the Year award

A local sign shop has been named top shop in the country. Speedpro Signs in Grande Prairie was chosen as Signmaker of the Year both in the Prairies and in Canada. Co-owner Jennifer Metituk says she was excited to win.

“It definitely makes us feel honoured because we work really hard and sometimes you don’t really know anything more then what you’re doing day to day and so to be recognized by the body that kind of oversees your industry is pretty flattering.”

Each year the award is given out by Sign Media Canada, which oversees signmakers in Canada.

Metituk and her husband Dave opened their shop on 117 Avenue back in 2002. One of the projects they are known for is the Subarctic Bear done by artist Robbie Craig. Dave installed a version of the piece in the lobby of the Montrose Cultural Centre.

She says she nominated her husband for the award because of all the work he did on that project. Throughout the application process, she thought the award would go to one person but was surprised when the whole shop won.

“They reach out and they do some investigation and they kind of take your information and the recommendations by others and then they make their decision based on that. They ultimately awarded it to our entire shop not just my husband.”

Looking ahead to the upcoming year, Metituk says they have some big projects on the go and she is hoping to have as good a year as they did this year.
