Dawson Creek to host 2019 World Junior A Challenge

For the fourth time, junior hockey will be returning to Dawson Creek. The city has been selected to host the 2019 World Junior A Challenge. Hockey Canada’s Vice-President of Events and Properties Dean McIntosh says he’s excited to be heading back to the city.

“We have established a great relationship with Dawson Creek and we are thrilled to be heading back to the city with the 2019 World Junior A Challenge. The community support at previous Hockey Canada events in Dawson Creek has been outstanding, and we know this event will be well-received by fans, community partners and volunteers in 2019.”

The tournament first started back in 2006. Since then, more than 300 NHL draft picks have participated. Dawson Creek has hosted the World Under 17 Hockey Challenge in 2015 and 2017 as well as Canada’s National Women’s Team Fall Festival last summer.

This June, the city of Dawson Creek and Spectra Venue Management signed a five year deal with Hockey Canada that would see one event happen at the Encana Events Centre every 18 to 24 months. Dawson Creek Mayor Dale Bumstead says this will be one of those events.

“We knew after signing a historic long-term hosting agreement with Hockey Canada that we would see a variety of events come to Dawson Creek, and having the 2019 World Junior A Challenge and its legacy of NHL draft picks is an opportunity for the hockey fans of the region to see some of the very best.”

This year’s challenge is currently going on in Bonnyville until December 15th. Next year’s tournament will run from December 7th to 15th.
