The local postal workers union is not happy about having its members ordered back to work. On Saturday, CUPW 744 in Grande Prairie will join unions in over 25 other cities across Canada to protest back to work legislation.
Postal workers were ordered back to work on November 27th after 37 days of rotating strikes. Union Vice President Connor Dowd-Taylor says he organized the rally because he says what the government did was unconstitutional.
“What we’re fighting for here is our charter and protected right to strike and our right to collective bargaining. We’ve seen from the response from unions and the general public across the country that the Liberal government, what they’ve done is unconstitutional, it’s illegal and we’re not gonna stand for it.”
This weekends rally is part of a national day of action and solidarity with postal workers. Dowd-Taylor organized it in around 48 hours. Even on such short notice, he is hoping to see at least 15 to 20 people come out and get involved.
“We’re really hoping to bring some light to the real issue at hand here and get more people involved in the local politics here. Hopefully, we can get some people to start contacting their MPs and get the federal government to overturn its decision.”
The rally will start on the south side of Revolution Place at 12 p.m. People will march north towards 99 Avenue, then west towards 214 Place ending back at the arena.
