UPDATE: Site C dam given Environmental Assessment Certificate, approved by federal government

An Environmental Assessment Certificate has been approved for the Site C dam on the Peace River in northeastern B.C., and the federal government has given its approval.

Although the certificate has been issued, the final decisions on the $7.9 billion project rests with that province’s government, and it could still be turned down.

Minister of the Environment Leona Aglukkaq says the project “will support jobs and economic growth while providing clean, renewable energy over the next 100 years”.

Her decision statement has 80 legally binding conditions for approval, while the environmental assessment certificate comes with 77 of its own.
