One killed in crash near Mayerthorpe

A crash near Mayerthorpe has left a man dead. RCMP from the town and Whitecourt responded to the single vehicle rollover on Highway 43 by Greencourt around 8:50 p.m. Friday night.

Police says it looks like a Kia sedan lost control while heading westbound, crossed the median, and rolled. The driver was ejected. His name has not been released.

At this point, investigators believe that the man’s body was then dragged by a large vehicle for roughly half a kilometre. Officers are looking to identify the second vehicle, and anyone with information is asked to contact mounties or Crime Stoppers.

The cause of the initial rollover is still under investigation, and an RCMP collision analyst and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner are involved. It’s noted that the roads were icy at the time and it was snowing heavily.
