Local woman to share her story about addiction

A local woman is preparing to share her struggles with addiction and recovery next week. November 26th to December 2nd is National Addictions Awareness Week in Grande Prairie.

During that week, Terri-Lynn Badger will be speaking to various groups about how she beat her addiction. She says her story first started in Whitecourt.

“It started with alcohol and then progressed into harder drugs. Eventually, I was using meth every day of my life for a number of years. I ended up homeless, selling drugs.”

Badger was abused at a young age and became suicidal. Something that followed her into adulthood. She says it wasn’t until she found herself homeless during the winter that she finally hit rock bottom.

“I would sit in the stairwell of an apartment to stay warm and I had just felt the sting of my rock bottom. I reached out to my mother who I hadn’t spoken to in years… and felt that I was ready to change my life.”

Badger moved to the city in 2015 to participate in the Rising Above program. She had a few relapses but has been fully clean since December 21st, 2016. She wants to let others know that there is hope.

“I want to share my message of hope to the addict who still suffers or to people in recovery who may be in pain or maybe to the young person who might pick up tonight for the first time not knowing the grips of addiction.”

Badger will be speaking at the Grande Prairie Friendship Centre following the Walk for Sobriety on December 1st. The walk leaves from The Salvation Army at 3:30.
