Clark Builders hired as new hospital construction manager

Clark Builders will be responsible for getting the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital open. Infrastructure Minister Sandra Jansen confirmed on Twitter Friday afternoon that construction company will be the new construction manager for the project.

While work is expected to start up again “shortly”, full construction won’t get underway until January 2019. The province claims the “phased-in approach” will give Clark Builders time to get on site and finalize agreements with sub-trades.

Construction on the new hospital has been suspended since September 10th when the province said it had cut ties with the former general contractor Graham Construction. That company says it was responsible for ending the contract in August.

Clark Builders was founded in Yellowknife in 1974 and is now based out of Edmonton. According to construction magazine On-Site, it brought in $634 million in revenue in 2016.

At this point, the exterior of the building is finished, and the interior is reportedly 75 per cent complete. Construction on the parkade has continued during the shutdown, as it is a separate project.

It’s unclear how much further this decision will delay the opening. The budget is $763 million. The provincial government has declined to provide any further information.
