Public asked to support Arctic Winter Games bid

The city is looking for help submitting its bid for the 2022 Arctic Winter Games. It’s asking the public to write letters showing why the games should be held in Grande Prairie. Bid Committee Co-Chair Owen Lewis says the letters are all part of the bid package he’s been tasked with putting together.

“We’re trying to show the tremendous support and sense of volunteerism we have here in the Grande Prairie Region. As part of that, we’re trying to get letters of support from the community itself, from businesses, from individuals, from organizations to show their support for our 2022 Arctic Winter Games Bid.”

The games are hosted every two years in colder climates. Grande Prairie last held them in 2010. If the city is chosen, it’s expected that around 2000 athletes, coaches and officials would come to the area. Lewis says hosting the games again would be a great chance to show off the city.

“It’s a tremendous opportunity for us to showcase our region. We live in one of the best places in the world and to show that to some of the other circumpolar nations and those who are travelling from far and wide. It’s a tremendous opportunity for our community.”

The bid package will need to be submitted by the end of the month. Letters of support can be sent to [email protected]. People can also go and sign the city’s bid committee’s page on change.org. All submissions must be in by November 15th.
