Grande Prairie Youth Council looking for new members

Calling all Teens and young adults interested in helping shape the future of the city. The Grande Prairie Youth Council is looking to recruit new members for their 2019 council year.

Community Youth Development Co-ordinator Jeremy Landon says the council was created to let the city know the types of issues that are affecting young people in the area.

“The whole idea around it is to give youth 13-24 years old the chance to highlight issues that are important to them in the community, research those issues, find out about them and then educate the leaders on why it’s important to them.”

The council was started by the city back in 2010. It currently has seven members but has room for 15 in 2019. The group meets once a week to talk about various topics including discrimination and LGBTQ+ issues. They then talk about how to raise awareness for them through things like presentations or reports to city council.

Member Danny Murphy joined Youth Council a year ago. He says he thought it would be a great way to get involved in his community.

“I really thought that it was a beautiful way to have an influence and be able to take a little bit of power and control. I wanted to feel connected to the community and be able to create change and connect with people.”

As part of the recruitment process, the council will be holding an open mic night at Tito’s Restaurant on November 7th. The event will be a chance for people to learn more about the group. Murphy highly recommends Youth Council to others.

“Its a very safe and encouraging space and they will be able to feel like a part of something…There are lots of volunteering opportunities and I think a lot of personal growth as well. You get to work on yourself and build your relationship with the community.”

Applications will be available at the event or can be found on the city’s website. The deadline to apply is November 16th.
