Breastfeeding moms hoping to set record in Grande Prairie

A group of local breastfeeding moms will be getting together this weekend to try and break a record for the most children breastfeeding at one time.

It’s an annual worldwide challenge, which Melissa Brewster of the Grande Prairie Breastfeeding Circle says is to raise awareness of the importance of breastfeeding.

“We know that is reduces risks of lots of chronic lifetime issues people can face, and it can help both mom and baby. Our bodies know what our babies need, so breastfeeding’s a way of ensuring our babies are getting what they need.”

Last year they had 48 nursing children, breastfed by 47 moms, and they hope to top that this year.

It’s a fun, informal event with socializing and refreshments.

They’ll be meeting at the Grande Prairie Library Saturday at 10:30 a.m. and everyone is encouraged to attend.
