Fort St. John man to be deported

A Fort St. John man once accused of terrorism has been ordered to be deported. The Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada has ruled that Othman Hamdan is a “danger to the security of Canada”.

“While Mr. Hamdan has no history of violence, he has praised lone wolf attacks, actively promoted the Islamic State, disseminated instructions on how to commit attacks and seems fascinated with the extreme violence of the Islamic State demonstrated by possessing Islamic State videos depicting gruesome murders,” says IRB member Marc Tessler.

Hamdan was arrested in July 2015, following an RCMP investigation into Facebook posts reported to be pro-ISIS propaganda. He pleaded not guilty to terrorism-related charges, and a judge found that while the posts may have been offensive, they weren’t necessarily encouraging acts of murder, assault or terrorism.

Hamdan is a Jordanian national who moved to Canada from the U.S. in 2002 and was granted refugee protection in 2004. The recent IRB decision deems him to be inadmissible to the country, but the CBC reports it’s unlikely he will be deported any time soon. He remains in police custody.
