Local groups gearing up for fundraising events

Locals wanting to help out organizations in Grande Prairie can do so starting on Saturday. This month, four groups will take part in an event called the Great Prairie Bottle Harvest. One of those is Dogs With Wings.

The organization trains service dogs for people all over Alberta. Puppy Raiser Cathy Botten hopes participating in the event will raise some money and get more people interested in what they do.

“We’re doing it locally in Grande Prairie specifically to raise funds for Dogs with Wings and combining it with a charity barbeque and a puppy information session to further highlight what Dogs with Wings is and how we could make use of volunteers.”

The Great Prairie Bottle Harvest is a province-wide, three-day event that helps groups raise funds through bottle returns. Every dollar earned goes back to the group that hosted the event. Botten decided to get involved because it was a way people could help without having to spend money.

“We know that sometimes finances are tight for people and there’s a lot of different fundraisers out there. Bottles become one way that people can contribute without necessarily having to put out any extra money of their own.”

The group will be collecting bottles on Saturday from 11-2:30 at Partners Naturally.

Three other bottle drives will be going on in the city in the next few weeks as well. The Highland Park Neighbourhood Association will be holding theirs on October 20th and Grandma’s place Dayhome and the Girl Guides’ will run theirs on the 27th.
