Farmers aid RCMP in stolen vehicle investigation

A group of local farmers has been credited with helping Grande Prairie RCMP arrest a suspect. They first came in contact with the 19-year-old Edmonton man on September 30th, when he had asked them for help getting a truck out of the ditch on Highway 670.

Police were already looking for him and the truck, as it had been reported stolen from British Columbia earlier in the day. Officers came upon it stuck in the ditch, which is when the suspect ran off into fields nearby.

“The farmers wasted no time in assisting,” says Constable Melanie McIntosh. “One jumped in his side-by-side and transported the RCMP member through the fields where she arrested the suspect without further incident. Two others remained on scene with police providing information for the investigation.”

The suspect already had outstanding warrants and is facing new charges. They include possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, mischief, resisting a police officer, and failing to comply.

“A strong partnership between citizens and the RCMP is critical to keeping our communities safe,” adds McIntosh. “The RCMP would like to thank these residents for their part in conducting this successful arrest.”
