City does not agree with results of new property tax ranking

A new study released on Tuesday says that Grande Prairie has the highest property tax rate in the province. The city does not agree.

The study done by real estate website Zoocasa shows that homeowners in the city pay 1.48 percent in taxes based on numbers from 2016. In a statement released by the city, they say their 2016 numbers actually put them at 1.18 percent.

“To get an accurate picture of what a typical home in each municipality pays, the report should have multiplied the municipality’s tax rate against the typical home price. To compare Canmore’s tax rate to Grande Prairie’s is not fair as the typical home in Canmore is worth over double that of a home in Grande Prairie.”

According to city numbers from 2018, they sit at 1.28 percent putting them six spots out of the top spot.

Property taxes are paid to the city and used to pay for things like infrastructure improvements, local services and education. Each year the city creates a budget and if more or less items are included in the budget the property taxes go up or down accordingly.
