Grande Prairie to Run for the Cure Sunday

This year’s Run for the Cure will be Janice Lovejoy’s first but likely not her last. The Grande Prairie woman has had three loved ones affected by breast cancer and says she wants to do whatever she can to prevent anyone else from being affected.

“I feel very strongly that I don’t want to have to go through this again, and if we can find a way to stop that for me personally and my friends and for anyone out there, how amazing would that be?”

Lovejoy has a niece who is currently going through her second battle with breast cancer, and her sister-in-law has been a survivor for nearly two years. She also lost her best friend to the disease two years ago and says it’s all made her want to join the fight.

“You just actually have to step up sometimes, force yourself to jump out there and get involved because it is pretty easy just to step back and let someone else carry it for you even though you’ve been involved personally.”

The Canadian Cancer Society CIBC Run for the Cure is being held September 30th in Grande Prairie to raise funds for breast cancer research, support programs, education, and advocacy. Lovejoy encourages others to find a way to do their part.

“We want people to come out and have fun and be proud of what they’re doing; they may have some part in finding a cure for cancer. If you can run or walk or participate in any way, sponsor someone, how amazing would that feel to next year say because of all these donations we’ve actually found something that will make this much easier for everyone?”

The run will be held at Muskoseepi Park with opening ceremonies at 9:30 a.m. There are one kilometre and five kilometre options. To register, visit cibcrunforthecure.com.
