Citing economic factors, Tervita says it will be terminating its municipal waste contract with the Central Peace Water Management Commission.
That means Saddle Hills County, Birch Hills County, the Village of Rycroft, and the Town of Spirit River will need to find a new place to dump their municipalities’ solid waste by this time next year.
However, Tervita will still take industrial waste at their site south of Spirit River.
Commission Chair Cindy Clarke says they’re “disheartened” by the decision, but are confident they’ll find a new alternative, noting that reopening landfills in the region is possible.
