Airport seeing an increase in passenger numbers

The Grande Prairie Airport may have seemed busier these last few months. Numbers show the airport has seen an increase in passenger since July. GPA Commission CEO Brian Grant says they are currently on track to reach the second highest amount of travelers in history.

“Right now we’re at about an 8.4 % increase over the same period last year. We’re projecting to reach our second highest passenger count on record in our history this year so it’s certainly been a busy summer.”

The airport saw its overall highest number of travelers back in 2015 but has had low turn out ever since. Grant finds it surprising that numbers are up now instead of around the holidays.

“Normally we see our winter months as being our busiest months and so other then July 2015 and December 2015 this July was by far busier. It’s certainly an indication that the economy and the income that is available for travel and spending has increased quite a bit in this last 6 to 8 months.”

The airport has been equipped to deal with high volumes of people since 2015 and with the recent addition of an extra security line, Grant says they shouldn’t have any problems if numbers continue to increase over the coming months.
