St. Andrew’s students applauded for bravery after threat

Staff and students at St. Andrew’s School are being commended for their bravery in the wake of a threat to their safety. RCMP in High Prairie got a report of a threat against the school on social media late Sunday night, but say they found the student responsible.

Classes went ahead as usual Monday morning, something Holy Family Catholic Regional Division Superintendent Betty Turpin says shows the strong bond people in the school have.

“When faced with a threat to student safety yesterday, they supported each other and overcame obstacles together. We understand that re-entering a school after a threat to safety has been made takes bravery, but we must trust our experts, our local RCMP officers, and respect the privacy of all involved.”

In response to the threat, school administration met with all students in grade four to 12 Monday to talk to them about what happened and the potential effects of what is said on social media. Turpin says all staff were calm and professional in dealing with them.

“As a school family, students and staff are expected to care for each other and communicate respectfully. Administration also reinforced the consequences of writing in anger on social media, and the dangers they could be exposing themselves to.”

An investigation into the threat continues. As of Monday, RCMP says no charges have been laid.
